One of the great advantages of traveling with two of the same bike is that you only need one set of spares (or at least the same spares) and you only need one set of tools. Both of our Elefants are essentially carbon copies of one another. The frames, motors, suspension, and wheels are stock and all the same. The electrical system modifications on both bikes are exactly the same with the same components and same wiring color (all modified wire matches the stock wiring coloring system). The components we fabricated—the pannier racks, crash bars, center stands and top box mounts—are also identical.

The list of tools we bring along has been modified over the years from previous motorcycle travels. Some of those bikes were problematic and needed maintenance. Much of what determines the list for us is what is required to take the machine to pieces. We don’t bring sockets that don’t fit anything on the bike—whatever the fastener, we will have a tool to fit it.
